The geography of Elba island

Hello friends, today I will talk to you about the island of Elba, one of the gems of the Tuscan Archipelago in Italy. Elba is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest in Italy. It is located between the Piombino channel to the east, about 10 kilometers from the coast, the Tyrrhenian Sea to the south and the Corsica channel to the west. Administratively, it is divided into 7 municipalities within the province of Livorno. Elba island is a combination of breathtaking landscapes, agricultural towns, golden beaches and green forests, with a fascinating history and a welcoming atmosphere.

The origin of the name

Elba island has an ancient and interesting history. It was known to the Greeks as Aithàle (Αιθάλη), a name derived from the Greek term aithàle, meaning soot, in reference to iron working activities in Elba's mines. In Latin, it was instead called Ilva, a toponym of probable pre-Roman origin from the Ligurian Ilvates, which during the Middle Ages was transformed into Ilba and finally Helba.
