Welcome to Vergiano: a small village in the hinterland of Rimini
Hello everyone! Today we want to introduce you to a small village in the hinterland of Rimini: Vergiano. With about 1,500 inhabitants, this village is only 7 km from the historic center of Rimini and 9 km from the famous beach.
Let's discover Vergiano's geography together
Vergiano mainly develops along the Marecchiese road with the "Borgo dei Ciliegi", the "Ghetto Randuzzi," and the "Ghetto Montanari." If you want to take a walk in the innermost part, we recommend visiting the Mirandola and Rodella streets, as well as the area known as "Gaiofana di Vergiano." This village in the hinterland of Rimini has a lot to offer, don't you think?
The history of Vergiano
According to the historian Tonini, the name "Vergiano" derives from the land owned by the Gente Virgilia, an ancient Roman family that had its headquarters right in these areas. But that's not all! It also appears that Virgil, the Divine Poet, stayed at an inn in Vergiano that was named "Virgiliana." Here, until a few years ago, there was a recreational club called Cooperativa "Virgigliana," which has now become a delightful restaurant called "Ristorante le Ruote."
Monuments and places of interest in Vergiano
Vergiano also has a very interesting villa, called Villa Mattioli. This was built in the mid-19th century at the request of the Marquis Audiface Diotallevi, who took advantage of the presence in the city of the engineer and architect Luigi Poletti from the Papal State, who was tasked with its construction. If you are a lover of history, you cannot miss the Tomb of Vergiano. Sources report that this was already present in 1485 and was equipped with a tower and a courtyard surrounded by an orchard. The Tomb of Vergiano was a fortified farm with functions of controlling the agricultural territory, representing a significant passage in the settlement of the countryside.
