Origins of the Name
Contrary to what one might think, the name "Rignano" does not derive from Janus and neither from the Flaminia road, the Roman consular road that crosses part of the municipal territory.
The Historical Reconstruction of Rignano Flaminio
Rignano Flaminio has a very ancient history dating back to the time of the Capenati, a flourishing Italic population that thrived in Lazio before the advent of ancient Rome. Capena, which stood on the Civitucola hill and was the capital of the Capenati, had its own language, similar to Latin and related to Etruscan and Sabine languages. After the Roman conquest, the Ager Capenas included the current municipalities of Capena, Civitella San Paolo, Morlupo, Fiano Romano, Nazzano, Ponzano Romano, Filacciano, Torrita Tiberina, Rignano Flaminio, Sant'Oreste, Castelnuovo di Porto and Riano.
In the Capenate territory it extended along the right bank of the Tiber Valley, between the cities of Falerii of the Falisci to the north, to the south-east with the Tiber and Cures Sabini, and to the south-west with the city-state of Veio federated with the Etruscan dodecapolis.
Rignano Flaminio is a municipality that has always had an important strategic position, which has made the city an important point for illustrious figures. Among these, we can mention the Emperor Otto I of Saxony in 972, while in 1159 Adrian IV died during his journey towards Civita Castellana, where he took refuge from a revolt plotted by some consuls.
The Owners of Rignano Flaminio
Rignano Flaminio has changed owner many times. Owned by the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, the municipality was given in emphyteusis in 1116 to a grandfather of Pope Savelli, Honorius III. Subsequently, it became the property of the Savelli and Borgia families, and then returned to the Savelli family after the fall of the Borgia. In 1607, it was sold to the Borghese, who erected it into a duchy, and then passed to the Muti family for a swap made in 1633. In 1701, it went as a wedding dowry to the Cesi family and in 1799, hereditarily, to the Massimo family.
The Testimonies of a Long History
The churches, the houses that still form the old quarter of the "Vicoli", the bombard, still intact, next to the ancient fortress of the Borgias, the sarcophagus and the portion of the ancient Flaminia road are the visible testimonies of the important past of Rignano Flaminio.
