Farewell to the Province of Caltanissetta

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about the Province of Caltanissetta, a province in Sicily that was abolished in 2015 and replaced by the Free Municipal Consortium of Caltanissetta.

History

The Province of Caltanissetta was created in 1818 by the Bourbon Kings of Naples when they divided Sicily into provinces. During the Bourbon period, the history of the province was closely tied to the exploitation of Sicilian sulfur. The foreign company in charge of this exploitation caused tragedies such as fires and collapses in which many local miners died.

After being abolished with the Sicilian Special Statute of 1946, the province was reconstituted in 1963 and transformed into a regional province in 1986. In 2014, the province and other regional provinces were replaced by Free Municipal Consortia.
