History
The territory where Borgo Bonsignore stands today was originally one of the fiefs of the Duchy of Bivona, known as "San Pietro". With the subdivision of the properties of the Duke of Bivona, the former fief of San Pietro passed to the Ospedali Riuniti of Sciacca, who rented the land for 18 years to the cooperative of farmers called "La Bonifica" in 1934.
With the hard work of the farmers, the land that had until then been used as pasture underwent enormous transformations. Access roads to the plateau, internal roads, irrigation channels, farmhouses, stables, administrative buildings, aqueducts, interpoderal roads were built, and drainage, reclamation and land arrangement works were carried out with the cultivation of olive groves and vineyards. Even the duny lands were cultivated. Many families from Ribera decided to move to Borgo Bonsignore, where a post office, a Carabinieri barracks, and a medical clinic were also built.
The Inauguration of Borgo Bonsignore
On December 10, 1940, the Sicilian latifundium colonization agency officially inaugurated Borgo Bonsignore, named after Antonio Bonsignore, a captain of the Carabinieri born in Agrigento, gold medalist of V.M., fallen in combat at Gunu Gadu in Italian East Africa on April 24, 1936 in the Second Battle of Ogaden.
The project was designed by the engineer Donato Mendolia and the construction was entrusted to the "Ferrobeton" company. The Borgo complex was equipped with a town hall, an elementary school, a restaurant, 25 farmhouses, a post office, a Carabinieri barracks, a medical clinic, and a parish church. To make all these services work, a doctor, a midwife, an officer of order, and two guards were sent.
New Expansions of Borgo Bonsignore
A few years after the inauguration, the lands of the former fiefs of "Cuci-Cuci", "San Pietro della Palma" and "Giardinello" were also included in the Borgo, extending it from the Magazzolo river to the Verdura river. The inhabitants, who were 100 in 1940, became 600 with these expansions.
After the war, Borgo Bonsignore was almost completely abandoned, but was then repopulated in the late 1960s.
