Rezzoaglio

Rezzoaglio: a hidden treasure in the Ligurian valley

Hello friends! Today I want to tell you about a beautiful town in Liguria, Rezzoaglio. With 867 inhabitants, it is located in the metropolitan city of Genoa, in the heart of the lower Val d'Aveto. Its name derives from the Vulgar Latin "rus agni", meaning "village of lambs", confirming the intense pastoral activity that took place in this area in past centuries.

Physical Geography

The territory of Rezzoaglio is the largest in the metropolitan city of Genoa, immediately after the capital. It stretches along the plain of the Aveto River and is surrounded by the highest peaks in Liguria, such as Monte Aiona (1701 m) and Monte delle Lame (1595 m). Here you will also find the Forcella Pass (875 m above sea level), which allows you to reach the Sturla Valley and the municipality of Borzonasca. Rezzoaglio is part of the Aveto Regional Natural Park, a true natural treasure of the region.

Rezzoaglio: a municipality between history and nature in Liguria.

History

The municipality of Rezzoaglio has ancient origins dating back to the 12th century. It is located along the road that connected the Fontanabuona Valley to Piacenza, and the monastery of San Michele de Petra Martina (later San Lorenzo) was created there, which is today the inhabited village of Villa Cella. Initially belonging to the Imperial Feuds of Santo Stefano d'Aveto, Rezzoaglio was then subject to the Malaspina family, as evidenced by a document dating back to 1164 by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Later, it passed to the Fieschi family and then to the Genoese Doria family and the local Della Cella family, who dominated the town from the 16th century to 1797.

What to see in Rezzoaglio

Rezzoaglio is an ideal destination for nature and history lovers. You can visit the San Lorenzo monastery, dating back to the 12th century, and admire the beauty of the Romanesque church, with its bell tower with two openings and decorated in terracotta. Among the other attractions in the municipality, I suggest taking a walk along the Trail of the Two Tombs, which will take you to the discovery of two ancient Roman funeral monuments. You cannot miss a visit to the small Church of the Madonna dell'Alpe and the picturesque village of Cabanne.

Climate and environment

Rezzoaglio enjoys a temperate climate, with hot and dry summers and cool winters. Thanks to the presence of the Aveto Regional Natural Park, the metropolitan city of Genoa has promoted sustainable and responsible tourism, aimed at protecting the precious surrounding environment.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Rezzoaglio represents a particularly interesting destination for those who love unspoiled nature and ancient history. I invite you to discover the beauties of this Ligurian municipality, among ancient monuments and breathtaking landscapes. Happy travels!
