Revine Lago is mainly divided into two areas, the southern slope of the Belluno Prealps and the valley floor. The former is made up of a very steep and predominantly forested area that starts from the peaks of the Belluno Prealps, located at about 2000 meters of altitude, reaching down to the valley floor. The maximum altitude of Revine Lago is 2000 meters, while the lower part is characterized by two lakes and a small flat area. Most settlements are located at the meeting point of the two areas, often coinciding with the numerous cones derived from the erosion of the mountains in front. In addition, the municipality includes a modest hilly area to the southeast.
Journey through the history of Revine Lago
Human presence in Revine Lago dates back to the late Neolithic era, around 6000 years ago, as evidenced by various findings in the area. After the invasions of the Celtic tribe and the Roman conquest, the zone was occupied by the Goths, the Franks, and finally the Lombards, who built the church of San Martino di Tours.
During the Middle Ages, Revine was administered by the bishops of Ceneda, while Lago became a possession of the Da Camino family. In this period, the rural commune was introduced, a form of self-government for the rational use of the territory, which remained in force until the Napoleonic era.
The territory passed to the Serenissima after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and then to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Later, the area was administered by France, Austria, and finally annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
During World War I, the area was affected by bitter fighting and occupied by Central Empires. During World War II, the mountainous environment favored the formation of several partisan brigades, including Tolot, Mazzini, and the Garibaldi Division "Nino Nannetti".
