History

Reino has been a very important village over the centuries, as evidenced by the different names it has acquired over time. In fact, in chronicles, it is called Regina, Regino, Resino, and Reino.

The village is located near the ancient city of Bebiano, founded by the Liguri Apuani, who were imported into the location by decree of the Roman Senate by proconsul Marco Bebio. The antiquity of Reino is confirmed by the chronicles of Vitaliano da Capua, bishop of ancient Capua, recording the appearance of the Saint to a sick man in the castle of Reino in 699 AD.

After the miraculous episode, Reino became a possession of the abbey of Santa Sofia di Benevento in 848 and was later the site of an important customs house under the government of the viceroys of Naples.

In 1947, in the territory of Reino, a bronze helmet with a hemispherical cap and an apex in the shape of a knob, decorated on the edge and on the short visor, was found. The importance of the object is given by the fact that it is an Etruscan helmet from the archeological museum of Florence, documenting the influence of Etruscan art on Samnite art.

Monuments and Places of Interest

In Reino, several civil architectures can be admired, including the Meomartini Palace, built in the early 19th century and now the seat of the municipality. The square in front of the palace, which bears the same name, hosts a private chapel and a stone-working fountain commissioned by engineer, archaeologist, and politician Almerico Meomartini.

Furthermore, the municipality of Reino was severely damaged by the Irpinia earthquake of 1962.

In conclusion, Reino is a municipality with ancient charm that offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in a secular history, among natural beauties and precious architectures. A place to discover and appreciate for its authenticity and simplicity.
