Refrontolo: Art, History, and Nature in a Municipality of Veneto

A brief history of Refrontolo

The toponym Refrontolo derives from the Latin term "roncum" which means deforested and plowed land, and "frontulum" which can be linked to "frond", probably referring to a forest. This suggests that the original meaning of the name is "place inhabited among forests". The area of Refrontolo was controlled by the Lombards and then since the 10th century by the Belluno-Feltre dioceses. In 1266 the inhabitants of Refrontolo decided to join the municipality of Treviso, against the interests of the Caminesi and the bishop of Belluno. During the Serenissima period, instead, the territory was administered by the Collalto, noble feudal lords who resided at the homonymous castle.

From 1797 Refrontolo followed the fortunes of Veneto, passed from Napoleon to Austria and then became part of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1946. It was an autonomous municipality until 1928; in that year Refrontolo, which at the time also included the fraction of Barbisano, was aggregated to the municipality of Pieve di Soligo, but became autonomous again in 1946, without the Barbisano fraction. However, on August 2, 2014, during the Feast of Men, at the Molinetto della Croda, four people lost their lives due to the overflow of the Lierza stream.

Symbols of Refrontolo

The coat of arms and the flag of the municipality of Refrontolo were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on August 25, 1953. The blue color on the coat of arms symbolizes the Lierza and Crevada streams that cross the municipality, while the tree at the top indicates the presence of woods and orchards and the green base represents the fertility and productivity of the countryside. The flag consists of a troncated cloth of white and blue.
