Realmonte

A unique place on the Sicilian coast

Hi friends! Today I want to tell you about Scala dei Turchi, a truly unique place on the Sicilian coast. It is a cliff of pure white marl that rises steeply above the sea along the coast of Realmonte, in the Free communal consortium of Agrigento.

The geology of Scala dei Turchi

Scala dei Turchi is made up of Trubi, a marl (rock) with a characteristic pure white color. Its shape is peculiar: it is a wave of marl that rises steeply above the sea. To access it, you have to proceed along the coastline and climb up a slope resembling a large natural limestone staircase. Once you reach the top of the cliff, the visible landscape embraces the Agrigento coast up to Capo Rossello.

The name and history of Scala dei Turchi

As I told you, the name derives from past pirate raids by Saracens, Arabs, and conventionally, Turks. The Turkish pirates, in fact, found shelter in this area less beaten by the winds and representing a safer landing.

Scala dei Turchi in the media

Did you know that Scala dei Turchi has also made its appearance in some media? In Microsoft Flight Simulator (video game 2020) the Scala has been faithfully recreated thanks to the use of geospatial data, height modeling, satellite imagery, and Triangulated Irregular Network, to provide a realistic replica. It is also present as a "location" in the music video "L'Addio" by the Coma Cose musical duo.

Conclusions

In short, Scala dei Turchi represents an unmissable tourist destination for anyone in Sicily. The dazzling white of its rock, which plays with the reflections of the sun, together with the beauty of the surrounding landscape, provide unique and unforgettable emotions. I recommend visiting it at least once in a lifetime!
