History
Origins of Villanova
Villanova dates back to the 1300s, when it consisted of only ten homes on the surrounding swamps. This place was a safe haven for those who were wanted for political or judicial reasons and wanted to stay away from authorities. The inhabitants of Villanova took advantage of the waters of the Lamone and the surrounding swampy herbs, which they used to create artifacts such as mats, bags, chair weavings, slippers, and hats. By 1371, Villanova already had 32 houses, built in a rustic style and covered with reeds.
The swamp herb industry accompanied the history of Villanova until the Second World War. Today, this activity is practically disappeared, but the Ethnographic Center of the Marsh Civilization is working to recover artifacts and processing techniques and organizes the famous Marsh Herb Festival every year.
World War II
During World War II, Villanova was the victim of various clashes that led to many deaths. The human toll that Villanova paid in World War II was 92, including 3 hanged. The population also had to face the arrival of the German army, which was felt like an invading foreign army. However, the resistance organized the establishment of the local headquarters of the National Liberation Committee (C.L.N.) and Italian troops and allies ultimately liberated the village.
