Porto Corsini

Porto Corsini: a seaside resort on the Romagna Riviera

Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about Porto Corsini, a beautiful seaside resort on the Romagna Riviera, which is part of the municipality of Ravenna. Located just 13 km from the city, Porto Corsini extends on both sides of the mouth of the Candiano canal. The name Porto Corsini is only used for the settlement located on the north bank of the canal, while the part on the south bank is called Marina di Ravenna. The area is included in district no. 4 "del Mare", based in Marina di Ravenna.

History of Porto Corsini

Let's talk about the history of this town, which dates back to the first half of the eighteenth century when it was chosen as the city's port to replace the ancient dock at the mouth of the Panfilio (or Pamfilio) canal. In 1748, the new dock was built on the orders of Cardinal Lorenzo Corsini (later Pope Clement XII) at the mouth of the new artificial canal, created by widening the Bajona canal (now Baiona). Initially, the main activity was the buying and selling of fish, supported and favored by the monks of S. Vitale, owners of the coastal areas located to the north of Ravenna. The area of Porto Corsini was instead owned by the Cavalli marquises.

After the Napoleonic era, the Papal State issued an edict to regulate the market of fish products and took over the ownership of the port. During the nineteenth century, the port continued to grow until it became, during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX, "the most frequented and most central for the commerce of the four Legations". In addition, the port of Ravenna was the nearest and most convenient stop on the Romagna coastline for Venice, Trieste, and other foreign ports of the Adriatic. It was also the only one to which every communication road between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and this part of the Papal State could lead.

From the eighteenth century until the First World War, Porto Corsini was Ravenna's port.

Porto Corsini: the Beauty of the Romagna Riviera.

The port of Ravenna

In 1847, the first steamboat docked at Porto Corsini. The port of Ravenna was the first among those of the Papal States for foreign supplies. In fact, the imports to Ravenna's port far exceeded the exports. At mid-century, the sum of the annual freight traffic was 25.

Porto Corsini today

Today, Porto Corsini has become one of the most beloved tourist destinations on the Romagna Riviera. It is ideal for a beach holiday but not only that. The beauties of the city of Ravenna are easily accessible, thanks to the proximity of the resort. The port of Porto Corsini, although no longer used for commercial purposes, is very popular with tourists looking for a place to spend a few hours in absolute tranquillity, perhaps admiring a beautiful sunset.

The beaches of Porto Corsini

The beauty of Porto Corsini is also given by its beaches. The largest is the Lido beach, located on the north bank of the Candiano canal. It is very popular with families, thanks to the presence of areas where children can play safely. For those who love peace and privacy, I recommend visiting the Levante beach. This is located on the south bank of the canal and extends for about one kilometer.

What to do in Porto Corsini

In Porto Corsini, there are many things to do, regardless of whether you are with friends or with your family. You can take walks along the promenade, admiring the beauty of the sea and its colors. Or, you can taste the specialties of Romagna's culinary tradition in one of the many restaurants in the area. There are also sports centers where you can practice activities such as beach volleyball, soccer or tennis.

I hope I have given you a good overview of Porto Corsini. If you are looking for a place to spend a few days relaxing, Porto Corsini is definitely the right choice!
