Marina di Ravenna
Discovering Marina di Ravenna
Hello friends, today I will take you to discover one of the pearls of the Romagna Riviera: Marina di Ravenna, or as they call it here in dialect, "Marèna ad Ravèna". It is a seaside resort located northeast of the center of Ravenna, and is the first of the Southern Lidi, which is the series of seaside resorts located south of the Candiano Canal. But let's go in order, I will tell you a little bit about the history of this resort.
History
If you are wondering where the name Marina di Ravenna comes from, the answer is simple: before the end of the First World War, on the east bank of the Candiano Canal - the canal that connects Ravenna to the Adriatic Sea - there was a fishing village simply called "Marina". After the war, the village began to attract the first tourists and in 1926 the Hospitality and Tourism Company was founded. To boost tourism, it was decided to call the urban agglomeration located on the right side of the canal "Marina di Ravenna". The village located on the left side instead, which was popularly nicknamed ''Abissinia'' at the time, retained the name Porto Corsini.
In the 1930s, the urban layout that still characterizes the resort today was fixed: the main axis, Via delle Nazioni, which runs along the coast, and the central square, now named after Dora Markus. During the Second World War, Marina di Ravenna was hit by a bombing that caused the destruction of several structures, including the lighthouse, the aqueduct tower, the church and several houses. Fortunately, the reconstruction was quick and already in the 1950s, new buildings were started on the coast.
Places of interest
Now that you know something more about the history of Marina di Ravenna, let's talk about places of interest. If you are outdoor sports enthusiasts, you cannot miss the sports climbing facility and the archery range. But the real highlight of Marina di Ravenna is undoubtedly the National Museum of Submarine Activities established by the Historical Diving Society Italy. Here you can admire vintage diving equipment, including the first dry suit in the world, and learn more about the history of diving and subaqueous exploration.
But Marina di Ravenna is not only sports and culture: here you can also find some of the largest naval companies in Italy, including Carnevali Yachts, and professional diving companies that operate at the Adriatic oil platforms. In short, there is really something for everyone.
What remains of the old Marina di Ravenna
On the coast, there are still 37 beach huts, structures built in the hinterland area in the early decades of the twentieth century, which represent a testimony of the old Marina di Ravenna, the pre-mass tourism one.
Conclusion
And so my short guide to Marina di Ravenna ends. A charming seaside resort that has evolved over the years, evolving from a fishing village to a successful tourist destination. Now you are ready to discover all the wonders of this enchanting resort. Hugs and happy vacation to everyone!
