History
The first documented traces of Castiglione di Ravenna date back to 1108, when the territory was mostly covered by forests and surrounded by swamps. During this period, ''Curte Castrileonis'' was founded, a unique community with a chapel dedicated to Saint John. The toponym Castiglione derives from a castle, perhaps a small fortress or a set of fortified houses belonging to the bishop of Ravenna, located in the territory of Castiglione di Cervia.
In the following century, thanks to new cultivation methods, reclamation works were carried out to increase agriculture and meet the growing population's food needs. The major landowners were the ecclesiastical institutions and aristocratic families.
In 1351, the chapel of Castiglione became a parish and was dedicated to Saint Pantaleon. The settlement, divided into two villas (Castiglione di Ravenna and Castiglione di Cervia), was described accurately in 1371.
The aristocratic family that owned most of the land in the area was the Onesti family. In 1370, the Da Polenta family became owners and maintained control of the area until the Venetian occupation in 1441. Part of the Castiglione properties was transferred to the Grossi family for the military services provided (Palazzo Grossi was completed in 1565).
