Randazzo has a toponym of uncertain origin. In Muhammad al-Idrisi it is found as ''r''(''a'')''ndaǧ'' and in Byzantine Greek as Ῥανδάκιον, ''Rhandákion''. It has been suggested that the name may derive from an ancient Greek personal name, Rhendákēs.
The History of Randazzo
The town of Randazzo has medieval origins but the most disparate civilizations in history have passed through its territory. Traces of art and culture left by Greeks, Roman civilization, Byzantines, Jews, Arabs, Normans, and Aragonese are visible everywhere. The city was inhabited since the time of the Romans in Sicily, as evidenced by the ancient walls and the remains of a bath that still remain in Randazzo. The presence of human settlements in the territory of the current Randazzo is believed to be from the 6th century BC. The city became famous during the Arab domination of the island, a period in which Randazzo acquired a strategic role that it maintained later, during the Norman period. The construction of the fortified garrison and the city walls dates back precisely to that period. The city possessed an important strategic position on the itinerary that from the inside of the island led from Palermo to Nicosia and then branched out in the two directions of Catania or Messina. In this era, Randazzo became a demesne city of Val Demone and was given the nickname "Plaena", by Frederick II of Swabia in the Parliament of Messina in the year 1233. The patron saint of the city is Mary SS.
