Geography and geology
Situated 214 metres above sea level, Ranco develops between the San Quirico hill and the southern promontory of the Quassa Gulf Park. In addition to its scenic beauty, this place is famous for its erratic boulders, accumulated on the northern slope of the San Quirico hill. Of these, the most famous is certainly the Regional Natural Monument of Sasso Cavallaccio, lying right on the shore of Lake Maggiore. Origin of the name
The name "Ranco" derives from the ancient verb "rancàr" or "roncàr", which means to cut down, clear and burn the forest. A root that tells a lot about the history and culture of this place, where nature has always been a precious asset to preserve and enhance.
History
Main historical events
The fortunes and events of Ranco have always followed those of the neighbouring fiefdom of Angera and its Borromeo Rocca, which have influenced the politics and social life of the municipality for many centuries. In 1276, precisely in Ranco, the Battle of Guazzera took place between the Visconti and the Della Torre, which marked an important stage in the history of Lombardy. In the fourteenth century, the areas of Ranco were partly owned by the Umiliati monastery of S. Lorenzo di Cannobio and partly feudal of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Governor of Milan. Later on, the whole territory of Ranco came under the domination of the Borromeo, feudal lords of Angera.

Inside the coat of arms of the municipality of Ranco, we see two symbols that represent the historical and traditional activities of the place: the vine that grows on a green terrace and symbolizes agriculture, and the silver-colored fish that indicates fishing.
