History of Madonna di Campiglio
Madonna di Campiglio has a long and rich history dating back to 1190 when a man named Raimondo decided to found a monastery-hospital to assist travelers. The monastery-hospital grew rapidly and at its historical peak around 1450 had 20 monks and 5 nuns. After its suppression in 1515, the town experienced a long period of decline until 1868 when Giovanni Battista Righi, a businessman from Rendena, bought the ruins from the Cathedral Chapter of Trento. Righi was the founder of the "Stabilimento Alpino," the first modern hotel in the town, and contributed to the rebirth of Campiglio.
In 1872, Campiglio hosted the founding of the Tridentine Mountaineering Society and over the years became a very popular tourist destination, especially thanks to the hotel owner Franz Josef Oesterreicher. In the period spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, Campiglio became a privileged destination for European and Habsburg aristocracy. Even Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, known as Sissi, spent two holiday periods there in 1889 and 1894.
