Quero Vas: history, art and nature of the main city.

History

The history of Quero Vas dates back to the Roman era, when the town was in a strategic position for control of the Piave valley, on the border between Valbelluna and Marca Trevigiana. Even in the urban structure of the town, the influence of the "castrum" is evident. Moreover, the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate passed near Quero and the people of the "Quarqueni", mentioned by Pliny the Elder, would be at the origin of the name of this enchanting town.

Over the centuries, Quero Vas was conquered by the Visigoths of Alaric, passed to the Roman-barbarian kingdom of the Ostrogoths and finally to the kingdom of the Lombards. After the arrival of Charlemagne, the town became a border with the bishopric of Feltre and a fiefdom of the county of Collalto di Susegana.

From the 13th century, the town was linked to the county of Treviso and followed its events. At that time, some important families of landowners stood out, such as the "da Castelli", at the head of the Ghibelline faction, pro-imperial. In 1265, precisely in Quero, they plotted a conspiracy against the bishop of Feltre and on November 15, 1283, they clashed directly with their rivals, the Caminesi, who defeated them.

When Quero became part of the Serenissima in 1339, its role as a strategic border locality ended. During a moment of decline of the Venetian Republic, the Castelnuovo was built, a bulwark to defend the Piave canal.

The charm of Quero

Today, Quero Vas is famous for its scenic beauty and its historical-artistic heritage. If you decide to visit this beautiful town, the first stop not to be missed is definitely the Castelnuovo, a magnificent palace dating back to the 14th century. The tower where the Quero Vas Museum of Fine Arts is located houses many of the art pieces that have been donated to the city.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, dating back to the 17th century, is also an excellent example of religious architecture. It is said that extraordinary paintings by the famous painter Jacopo Palma the Younger can be found inside.

Quero is also known for its gastronomy. If you decide to visit, you must absolutely taste the typical products of the area, such as polenta and porcini mushrooms. There are also festivals held throughout the year, where you can taste these delicious dishes.

Finally, a few kilometers from the town of Quero is the Piave river, one of the most fascinating in Italy. Its transparent waters hide an incredible fauna and flora, and here you can also go rafting and hiking.

In conclusion, Quero Vas is a town that cannot be missed on your list of places to visit. Rich in history, scenic beauty and cuisine, Quero is a true immersion in the traditions of an authentic Italy. We're waiting for you!
