Quattordio

Welcome to Quattordio, a town with an ancient and fascinating history!

Welcome to the beautiful city of Quattordio, located in the province of Alessandria, in the wonderful region of Piedmont. Quattordio boasts an ancient and fascinating history that dates back to the Roman era, during which micro-colonies were developed to supplement existing cities. Here, we find the milestone that indicates the distance of 14 miles from Asti, which gave the city its name.

The History of Quattordio

The day that marked the birth of Monferrato as a defined political territory, March 21, 967, was when the prehistory of Quattordio turned into its history. The dominion of this part of the Piedmont region passed from Emperor Otto I to Aleramo. In the 12th century, two new states were formed, the Municipality of Asti and the Municipality of Alessandria, which contested the territory, also involving Quattordio. In 1168, Alessandria was founded, while the Municipality of Asti was created in 1095 by the Bishop of the diocese in which Quattordio was located.

During the period of conflict between the Municipalities of Alessandria and Asti, with the participation of the Marquises of Monferrato, Quattordio was a crossroads between these places. In 1159, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa subdued Asti and Quattordio was included among the forty-six villages that were part of the podestà. Quattordio is considered to belong to the Municipality of Asti, which later became the Republic of Asti.

How Quattordio is divided

The town of Quattordio develops alongside the Lower Po Valley state road 10, between Asti and Alessandria. The settlement is divided by the Chiesetta stream, which separates the old nucleus from the modern one. The square in front of the current parish church was where the Roman milestone was located.

What to see in Quattordio

The city of Quattordio is small but rich in history and culture. The old nucleus of the village still has the appearance of the ancient Piedmontese farmyard. The parish church of San Protasio, built in 1760, is located on the ruins of the ancient church from the 1400s. The church has a beautiful bell tower, inside of which one can observe the mechanics of the 19th century clocks.

The Tower of the Grimaldi, a medieval building, is located on the bank of the Chiesetta stream. This tower is one of the few stone buildings in the town and has recently been restored to allow tourists to visit it.
