Hi friends! Today we will talk about Turin, a city located in the Italian region of Piedmont and with a population of 842,472 inhabitants (data updated as of October 31, 2022). Turin is the fourth most populous municipality in Italy and is also the heart of a metropolitan area with about 1.7 million inhabitants.

Turin has one of the most important economies in Italy and has always played a fundamental role in this field. Along with Milan and Genoa, it formed the industrial triangle of the years of the Italian Economic Miracle. Today, it is one of the major poles of university, art, tourism, science and culture in Italy. In addition, within the territory of Turin, there are buildings and areas protected by UNESCO such as some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of the Savoy residences in Piedmont, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and the Po hills area, a biosphere reserve.

History of Turin

The history of Turin is two thousand years old, in fact the city was probably founded in the 3rd century BC by the Taurini. After the Ostrogothic dominion, in the Middle Ages it became the capital of an important duchy, then passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy, finally becoming a city of the Duchy of Savoy in 1563, of which it was then also the capital. In 1861, Turin was the first Capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy.

Turin has been the venue for several international events such as the International Exhibition of Turin in 1911, the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006, the ATP Finals since 2021, and in 2022 it was the host city of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, one of the most important musical events in the world. Turin is also the birthplace of some of the most famous symbols of Made in Italy such as vermouth, Gianduiotto chocolates, grissini and espresso coffee.

Territory of Turin

Turin is located in the plain between the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po. The city is surrounded by the alpine valleys: Val di Susa, Valli di Lanzo and Val Sangone, which allow to reach nearby France through the Frejus tunnels. In this territory there are also parks and nature reserves of exceptional beauty.
