Pumenengo

A small town in the Eastern plain of Bergamo

If you want to take a brief visit to a peaceful place outside of the city, Pumenengo might be a good choice. With its 1,672 inhabitants, this small town in the Eastern plain of Bergamo will make you breathe a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere, just a few kilometers from Bergamo.

A medieval history

The history of Pumenengo is linked to the medieval era, when the territory was ruled by the Lombards before passing under the dominion of the Franks. In the eleventh century, the territories were donated in feud to the Diocese of Cremona.

However, it was during the lordship of the Barbò that the village had a period of notoriety. Due to the struggles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, the town was equipped with numerous fortified buildings, including the famous castle of the counts Barbò.

Pumenengo was located in a border area between the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan and was considered a real "tax-free" zone called "Calciana". In this area, smuggling was one of the main sources of livelihood.

The symbols of Pumenengo

The coat of arms and flag of Pumenengo were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 2023. The coat of arms has a Pumenengo tower seen in black founded on the golden countryside crossed by the natural river, with natural trees thriving on the countryside.

The current economic situation

Unfortunately, like many other towns in the Bergamo plain, Pumenengo has suffered from the crisis in the agricultural sector, which has not been compensated by industrial evolution. This has relegated the town to a marginal role in the economy of "low" Bergamo.

Despite this, the town continues to maintain its charm, with its old houses, narrow alleys, and shops. If you are looking for a break from the hectic city life, Pumenengo may be the perfect place for you.
