History

Puegnago del Garda is a place rich in history, as evidenced by archaeological finds and palafittes at the lakes of Sovenigo. The name seems to derive from the Latin person "Popinius", (from which "Popiniacus" and the medieval toponym "Puviniaco"); during the Roman era (1st century BC), there was also a Roman villa discovered in 1971, and in the 10th century there was also a temple dedicated to the goddess Victoria.

From the 10th century, the inhabitants built a fortress to protect themselves from the incursions of northern populations, particularly of Magyar origin. The fortress had an irregular hexagonal footprint, equipped with towers, one of which was transformed into the current bell tower. It passed in the fifteenth century from the Visconti lordship to the dominion of the Republic of Venice, until the Napoleonic and then Austrian occupation, following the subsequent historical events of the unification of Italy.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Puegnago del Garda has a rich cultural and artistic heritage. Among the main attractions are the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, dating back to the early seventeenth century, which houses a Via Crucis by Antonio Dusi. Also worth seeing is the Church of Madonna della Neve, built at the end of the nineteenth century. Another point of interest is the Bell Tower located in Castello. The building, dating back to the nineteenth century, is surrounded by enclosing walls that follow the irregular shape of the hill on which it was erected.

The municipal territory also includes the natural oasis of the Sovenigo Lakes, three water mirrors of intramorainic origin. In the largest of these, the famous Nelumbo, a species imported, according to tradition, from Japan, bloom.

Food and Wine

The cuisine of Puegnago del Garda is unique and delicious, and can boast the use of "Garda" olive oil (a type of Lombard oil) and D.O.C. wines from these places, including "Groppello" which is certainly the emblem. During the summer, a fair dedicated to these specialties is held. Other traditional dishes of the area are the gnocchi of Puegnago, made from bread and flavored with basil, served in tomato sauce.

Conclusions

Puegnago del Garda is certainly a small but fascinating town that deserves a visit. With breathtaking views of Lake Garda and many historical and cultural attractions, Puegnago is a perfect place for those looking for relaxation and want to taste local culinary delights. You will find a unique and welcoming atmosphere, ideal for spending a pleasant day with family and friends.
