Provaglio Val Sabbia
The History of Provaglio Val Sabbia
Provaglio Val Sabbia is a municipality located in the Sabbia Valley in Lombardy province of Brescia. Its history follows that of its neighboring municipalities and can be traced back to the 8th century with its church dedicated to saints Quirico and Giuditta. The territory was once owned by the Benedictine monastery of Leno but later came under the rule of the Visconti family and then the Venetian Republic. In the 17th century, the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Cornelle was erected. In 1859, Provaglio Val Sabbia became a part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Changes and the Birth of Mario Tonni
With a decree in 1928, the municipalities of Provaglio Sopra and Provaglio were merged into one municipality: Provaglio. In 1930, Mario Tonni was born in Provaglio Val Sabbia, the only admiral from the Sabbia Valley to have served in the Italian Navy. Tonni passed away in 2005, and in 2011, the Port of Lake Idro in the municipality of Idro was named after him.
Massacre of Partisans
On March 5, 1945, ten partisans from the 7th Matteotti Brigade were executed by the Black Brigades in the Cesane area in the municipality of Provaglio Val Sabbia after a firefight on Mount Besume. Every year on the anniversary of the massacre, on the first Sunday in March, a marble plaque commemorating their names is displayed. The Chiesetta sul Monte Besume, located at an altitude of 1,100 meters, is commemorated on the last Sunday in May.
In summary, Provaglio Val Sabbia has a rich history that includes its church dedicated to saints Quirico and Giuditta, the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Cornelle, the birth of Mario Tonni, and the massacre of the partisans.
