History of Provaglio d'Iseo

The territory of Provaglio was inhabited already in prehistoric times, and according to archaeological evidence, a pile-dwelling village was present. During the Roman Empire, Provaglio was crossed by an important consular road that connected Brescia with the Val Camonica.

During the medieval period, Provaglio was part of the pieve of Iseo, from which it separated around 1200 as a parish established in the Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa. During this period, there were often violent disputes between Guelphs and Ghibellines in the area, but agriculture was the main occupation. In 1493, the municipality of Provaglio had 1,080 inhabitants, while Provezze had 620 inhabitants.

During the Venetian, Napoleonic, and Austrian domination period, the town remained relatively outside of history. However, in 1629, a group of Lanzichenecchi was faced near the town. In the spring of 1630, a severe plague epidemic hit the area, drastically reducing the population of Provaglio and Provezze.
