Propata: history, nature and mysteries in the Genoese hinterland.

A village with a millenary history

According to local historical tradition, the village of Propata dates back to the 10th century and was founded by the inhabitants of nearby villages, who escaped frequent raids by the Saracens. In the area, the monks of the abbey of San Colombano operated.

In the Middle Ages, Propata followed the fate of nearby Torriglia, first as a possession of the Malaspina family and only from the 13th century of the Fieschi. In the 14th century, it was under the dominion of the Duchy of Milan, until the cession of the village to the Genoese Doria family.

Towards the end of the 18th century, it was established as an independent municipality with the suppression of the imperial fiefs. In 1797, with the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, it was part of the department of Eastern Ligurian Mountains, within the Ligurian Republic.

Subsequently, in 1815, Propata was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia and then to the Kingdom of Italy. In 1953, the municipality was severely hit by the flood that devastated the entire val Trebbia.

A place of UFO sightings

In the seventies, just like in nearby Torriglia, Propata was the scene of numerous UFO sightings, particularly in conjunction with one of the most sensational ufological cases in Torriglia. Pier Fortunato Zanfretta was the protagonist of this incredible event.

In summary, if you love nature and are passionate about history and mysteries, you cannot miss the small village of Propata. Among suggestive excursions and historical curiosities, you will find a place full of charm and surprises.
