Primaluna
Welcome to Primaluna: the original village of the Della Torre family
Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about Primaluna, a beautiful town of 2224 inhabitants in Lombardy, in the province of Lecco. Primaluna is famous for being considered the original village of the noble family of Della Torre, although they were actually from Milan and had received in fiefdom the county of Valsassina with the fortified village of Primaluna as its capital.
But Primaluna has a long history behind it, with ancient human settlements, including Celts, Etruscans, Romans, Lombards, and Franks. The arrival of Christianity in the valley might have given the town its name, "Primum Lumen," which means "first light of Christianity." But there are also other interpretations that connect the name to the town's geographical position or to a local historical figure, Martino della Torre, known as "the Giant."
The history of Primaluna
Over the centuries, Primaluna has undergone many events, such as the construction of a fortification around the 11th century and the defeat of the Della Torre family in the Battle of Desio. From an ecclesiastical point of view, Primaluna served as the Pieve of Primaluna for most of Valsassina and other areas of the zone until 1788.
But perhaps the most tragic event in the history of Primaluna was the landslide of Gero, which occurred on November 15, 1762. A large part of the mountain detached and hit and destroyed more than a hundred homes, killing many people.
Primaluna in the 20th century and today
During the 20th century, Primaluna experienced significant economic and social development, which led it to become the town we know today. In 1992, it passed from the province of Como to that of Lecco, also changing its ISTAT and postal codes.
But the history of Primaluna does not stop here. Currently, the parish of the town is part of the Pastoral Community of Madonna della Neve of Biandino, along with other parishes in the area.
