Madonna di Campiglio: a mountain tourist destination

Madonna di Campiglio is a tourist destination located in the autonomous province of Trento, surrounded by the beautiful Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello and Presanella Alps. This town, which has only 822 inhabitants, is a very popular vacation spot, especially in winter. The ski slopes and lifts are among the best in Italy and attract many tourists every year. Madonna di Campiglio is part of the Skirama Dolomiti ski resort.

The town can be reached by car thanks to the Strada statale 239, which connects the Val di Sole with the Valli Giudicarie passing through Campo Carlo Magno. At an altitude of about 1700 meters, there is the village of Patascoss, which is connected to the center of the town through the "3-Tre" slope or the lifts in the summer.

The history of Madonna di Campiglio

Madonna di Campiglio was founded in 1190 by Tal Raimondo, who wanted to establish a monastery-hospice to assist travelers. The monastery grew rapidly, reaching 20 monks and 5 nuns in 1450. The monastery had achieved considerable wealth thanks to the donations of the faithful and represented an important center of assistance for the local population. However, in 1515, the monastery was suppressed, and Madonna di Campiglio began to decline.

In 1868, Giovanni Battista Righi, an entrepreneur from Rendena, purchased the ruins of the ancient monastery and founded the "Stabilimento Alpino," the first modern hotel in the area. Thanks to Righi, Madonna di Campiglio revived its life. In the years 1874-75, Righi built the first carriage road that connected Madonna di Campiglio to Pinzolo and the rest of the world.

Madonna di Campiglio became a privileged destination of European and Austro-Hungarian aristocracy thanks to Franz Josef Oesterreicher, who succeeded Righi in leading the town. Empress Sissi spent two vacation periods in Madonna di Campiglio, in 1889 and then in 1894. Sissi stayed at the Hotel des Alpes, renting the top two floors. During that time, a group of English skiers climbed the nearby Monte Spinale to test its skiing potential. Madonna di Campiglio began its path as a winter tourist destination.
