Predazzo: between nature and geology of the Dolomites

Let's discover the physical geography of Predazzo

Territory

Predazzo is located at the confluence of the Travignolo stream, which descends from the Dolomite group of Pale di San Martino, and the Avisio stream coming from the Fedaia Pass. The territory of the municipality is quite extensive, and includes some hamlets and the Pòz area on the slopes of Mount Mulàt. The altitude ranges from a minimum of about 1,000 meters above sea level to a maximum of over 2,800 meters above sea level of the Dolomite peaks of Latemar and Catena del Lagorai.

Climate

The climate in Predazzo is typically alpine with cold temperatures during winter and mild temperatures during summer. Precipitation is abundant and the average annual rainfall is almost 800 mm. The minimum and maximum absolute temperatures can reach -21 °C and +38 °C.

Geology

The "basin" morphology of Predazzo is due to the collapse of a volcano that occurred about 200 million years ago. This territory has been shaped by episodes of uplift and subsidence of the earth's crust, erosion, and glaciation. Hence the nickname "Treasure Chest of Geology" by which Predazzo is known, due to the presence of granites, lava, and marine sediments. The area has attracted scholars and scientists to the point of becoming a center of aggregation and study.
