The city has a two-thousand-year history and was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini. Later, it was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus and became known as ''Iulia Augusta Taurinorum''. After the domination of the Ostrogoths, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin in the 11th century and then came under the nominal rule of the House of Savoy.

Modern era

In 1563, Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. In 1720, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia and was the first city of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. Turin also hosted the International Exhibition of 1911.

Turin is the third largest industrial production and economic complex in the country after Milan and Genoa, thus being part of the industrial triangle during the years of the Italian economic miracle. This city is one of the major university, art, tourism, science, and cultural centers of Italy. In addition, the city is home to the Italian automotive industry, an important center for publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, space sector (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Turin is constantly developing at the international level and has attained the rank of global city (third Italian city after Milan and Rome) in the "Gamma" category. It is the host of the ATP Finals and the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Turin is also famous for culinary excellence such as espresso coffee, breadsticks, gianduja, and vermouth.

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po. The city faces the mouth of some alpine valleys such as Val di Susa, Valleys of Lanzo, and Val Sangone. Turin is crossed by the river Po that flows from south to north.
