Welcome to Prata Camportaccio: a brief introduction to the municipality
Hello everyone and welcome to the beautiful Prata Camportaccio! This municipality is located in the province of Sondrio in Lombardy and has about 2,877 inhabitants. Our municipality consists of two main towns: Prata Camportaccio itself and San Cassiano, which is located about 5 km south of the municipal capital.
The physical geography of the municipality
The territory
The municipality is based in the town that gives its name to the municipality, Prata Camportaccio, located on a slope traversed by the Schiesone stream and inhabited by about 1224 people. Here you can also find the town hall and nearby there is a bike-sharing station with assisted pedal bicycles, perfect for exploring the area.
San Cassiano is the most populous town in the municipality and has a rather low average age of around 40 years compared to the area's average. It is dominated by Pizzo di Prata, which rises to 2727 m above sea level.
Minor villages
The municipality also includes various smaller villages, including Pizzo, Porettina, Tanno and Malaguardia. Each of these has its own character and unique beauty. Tanno, for example, is located on the northern border with the municipality of Chiavenna, and together they form an uninterrupted conurbation.
In the Pizzo area, there is a platform for collecting and storing urban waste from the Valchiavenna area, managed by the Society for Ecology and Environment, SECAM SPA of Sondrio.
The history of Prata Camportaccio
Prata Camportaccio has a long history that dates back to Roman civilization when the Spluga Road passed through the municipality, connecting Milan to Lindau via the Spluga Pass. The name Prata already appears in documents from 973 AD, but the municipality became autonomous from Chiavenna only around the thirteenth century.
The name Camportaccio was added to Prata in 1863 to avoid situations of homonymy.
The history of San Cassiano
The traces of San Cassiano date back to 1108 when the village was defined "San Cassiano di Arona" in a document. Later, in the seventeenth century, the name changed to "San Cassiano in Bosco", before becoming San Cassiano di Valchiavenna in more recent times, but called simply San Cassiano by everyone.
Conclusions
