Welcome to Pralboino: a flat municipality with ancient history

Hello everyone and welcome to Pralboino, a municipality of 2,826 inhabitants located in the Po Valley of the province of Brescia, Lombardy. In this text, I will talk about the physical geography and climate of Pralboino, its origins and ancient history.

Pralboino, history and geography of a Lombard municipality.

Physical geography

Territory

The territory of Pralboino is mainly flat, but has some raised areas such as the town center and the northeast zone. The highest area of the town center is the hill where Via Dossello and Via Borgo di Sopra are located, which is 48 meters above sea level. The municipality borders to the south with the province of Cremona and to the west is bathed by the Mella river, which marks the border with the municipalities of Milzano and Seniga. The territory of Pralboino is crossed by numerous artificial canals used to irrigate the fields, including the Santa Giovanna canal, an irrigation channel dug in 1509.

Climate

The climate of Pralboino is typical of the municipalities of the high Po Valley, with hot and humid summers and cold and often foggy winters. Snowfalls can also occur during the winter months. The municipality is classified in the Classification of Italian Municipalities.

Origin of the name

The toponym "Pralboino" is traced back to the term "Meadow of Alboino", a possible testimony to the presence of a military field of the Lombard monarch, conqueror of part of the Italian peninsula. The first written documentations report the Latin toponym of ''Castrum Novum cum ecclesia Santci Andree''. The name "Pratum Alboini" appears only from the second half of the 12th century. It is hypothesized that the change of name could be the result of a process of nobilitization of the places following the development, in the same second half of the 12th century, of reconstructions of the Lombards' history.

History

The first written reference of Pralboino dates back to a bull of Emperor Otto I of Saxony in the 10th century. The territory was part of the domain of the Abbey of Leno. Over the centuries, Pralboino underwent various modifications and enlargements of the town center and productive activities. In the 19th century, during the era of the reclamation of the swampy lands of the area, numerous artificial canals were built for the irrigation of the fields. During World War II, the municipality suffered damage due to air bombings.

Today, Pralboino is a small peaceful municipality, but with an ancient and interesting history. It offers its visitors the beauty of a typical area of the Po Valley, with its canals and cultivated fields. If you are in the vicinity of Brescia, I recommend you to come and visit and discover in person all the wonders of Pralboino.
