Pozzonovo: the Venetian municipality with millennial charm.

History

Human presence in Pozzonovo dates back to the Neolithic period, as evidenced by finds along the Conselvano embankment in the Ca 'Polcastro locality, which are related to the civilization of the Veneti. Later, in the same area, Centuriazione was developed.

The name of the town appears in the Codex of Ezzelino, a parchment from the 13th century, which refers to the Contrada Puthei Novi, which is linked to the parish of Santa Giustina di Monselice. In the 14th century, it is believed that there was already a permanent priest in Pozzonovo and the first church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, would have been built in this period.

The town was recognized as an independent parish in 1457, although Monselice still considered it its own until the arrival of the Republic of Venice. In the 16th century, hydraulic reclamation work began on the numerous marshy areas present in the territory in order to improve agriculture.

After the collapse of the Republic of Venice and the assumption of power by the Austrian Empire, Pozzonovo had its representative. In 1866, the town became part of the Kingdom of Italy. Subsequently, the fountain, symbol of the town, was built, and in the immediate post-war period, the municipal coat of arms and flag were created. The Ca’ Giovanelli water pump was then built, which allowed the reclamation of the last marshy lands.

Religious architecture

For the Catholic Church, the territory of Pozzonovo is administratively part of the Monselice Vicariate, which is in turn an administrative division of the Diocese of Padua. The territory is divided into two parishes, Pozzonovo and Stroppare.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the parish church of Pozzonovo and is dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The building was erected in place of the previous church of Santa Maria, which in the 15th century during the visit of Bishop Pietro Barozzi, was described as very small in size, 14 m long and 6 m wide. The current church has undergone numerous renovation interventions that have partially modified its appearance and structure. The most important intervention of the 19th century was followed by the construction of the Neoclassical facade in 1910. The bell tower, on the other hand, was built at the end of the 18th century and has not been modified.

Pozzonovo is a fascinating place with a rich history and numerous religious monuments of great importance. If you are nearby, be sure to pay a visit!
