Pozzo d'Adda

Pozzo d'Adda: history and territory

Hello! Today I want to talk to you about Pozzo d'Adda, a town in the metropolitan city of Milan in Lombardy. I don't know if you know this, but the town is located about 25 kilometers northeast of Milan and owes its name to the alluvial land formation characterized by numerous wells.

The first document that refers to Pozzo d'Adda dates back to 1015, but the first certain attestation of the existence of the town is from 1252. Initially, Pozzo was considered a dependency of Vaprio d'Adda and only in 1345 did it become an official municipality, appearing in the "Statute of Streets and Waters".

During the Middle Ages, Pozzo was involved in the wars between Vaprio d'Adda and Trezzo sull'Adda, due to its strategic position between the two cities.

In the eighteenth mile of the Roman road that connected Bergamo to Milan, there is the hamlet of Bettola, whose name seems to derive from a small refreshment building that stood in that place. Until the nineteenth century, both Pozzo and Bettola were predominantly agricultural centers, but later some industrial companies arrived that absorbed part of the local workforce.

The parishes

In the municipal territory, there are two parishes: one in the capital dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot and one in the hamlet dedicated to the Most Holy Redeemer. The parish of Pozzo followed the Roman rite, while that of Bettola followed the Ambrosian rite. In 2005, the two parishes merged into a pastoral unit and in 2007 adopted the Ambrosian rite, which is peculiar to the Archbishopric of Milan.

Monuments and places of interest

Pozzo d'Adda is rich in monuments and places of interest. One of the most important is the former parish church of Saint Anthony the Abbot, which is a multifunctional building. The new parish church of Saint Anthony the Abbot was consecrated in 1901 and is very beautiful.

In the hamlet of Bettola, instead, there are the oratory of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows, the church of Saint Elizabeth, and very charming sixteenth-century buildings. The church dedicated to the Most Holy Redeemer, consecrated in 1910, is also worth a visit.

Finally, in the municipality, you can admire historic villas such as Dugnani Palace, Montalto Villa, and Brizzolara Villa, which belonged to the nobles who lived in the town.

Conclusions

There you have it! I have told you everything there is to know about Pozzo d'Adda, a fascinating town with a rich history and many wonderful places to visit. If you happen to be in the area, don't miss the opportunity to visit this gem of Lombardy.
