Santa Maria Oliveto

Welcome to Santa Maria Oliveto!

We present to you Santa Maria Oliveto, the largest hamlet of Pozzilli, a town just 7 kilometers away. This medieval village is surrounded by 11 towers, still standing today, which create a very suggestive atmosphere. Inside the walls, you will find the church of San Lorenzo Martire, which features a 13th-century fresco depicting Christ among the apostles.

A breathtaking landscape

Santa Maria Oliveto is located on a hill at 378 meters above sea level. The environment is surrounded by olive groves, evergreen oak forests, and Mediterranean vegetation, which make the landscape very suggestive. In winter, the climate can become quite harsh, while in summer, it is hot and breezy.

Festivals and traditions

September 8th, the feast of Our Lady of Grace, and August 9th and 10th, celebrations in honor of St. Anthony of Padua and San Lorenzo Martire, are three very important dates for the local community. The people of the village gather in the church to celebrate mass, then there is a procession through the village streets, popular games, dances in the square, and fireworks. Additionally, during Easter night, the fire is lit in the Seggio square.

An aging community

Santa Maria Oliveto was hit by emigration starting from the early 1900s. Many young people left for abroad to seek fortune, which led to a gradual decline in the population. Today, most of the inhabitants of the village are elderly, which has caused a drastic reduction in public services. The only local shop still in activity is a small grocery store, and everything else must be sought in neighboring towns.

We invite you to visit Santa Maria Oliveto, a fascinating place with a hospitable climate, perfect for a day trip or a short holiday. In any case, you will be greeted with kindness and hospitality by its inhabitants.
