Fodico
Fodico, an ancient village rich in history
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a small village in the municipality of Poviglio, in the province of Reggio Emilia: Fodico. This locality is located about 3.5 km from the municipal capital, on the border with the municipalities of Brescello, Boretto and Castelnovo di Sotto.
But Fodico is more than just a simple village: it is a place rich in history, which has seen human presence since the Bronze Age. The settlements present in the area are also attested to in the 19th century, when the paleontologist Gaetano Chierici conducted excavations in the area, highlighting the presence of a vast Terramara, called Santa Rosa.
But Fodico also experienced the passage of important rivers, such as the Po, which in 1765 and 1951 caused serious floods, documented by the respective parish priests of the time, Don Giuseppe Diemi and Don Arturo Gualtieri.
The church of San Giacomo
One of the most suggestive places in Fodico is the church of San Giacomo, located inside the inhabited center. The church, which dates back to the 12th century, seems to have originally been a simple oratory, but over the centuries it has been enlarged and enriched, becoming a point of reference for the community.
The parish is dedicated to San Giacomo il Maggiore and is already mentioned in the Parchment of the Tenths of 1230, in which it appears dependent on the Plebana of Poviglio, to whose religious jurisdiction it still belongs today.
The inscription above the entrance portal reminds us that the church was restored and enlarged in 1763 by the rector Giuseppe Diemi. A curiosity: the church was used as a movie set in 1971, to shoot some scenes of the film "Il provinciale" by Luciano Salce.
The Frazione Council
Since 2011, Fodico has had its Frazione Council, a civic body with consultative and propositional functions, established by resolution of the Municipal Council. The Council is composed of the three candidates who received the highest number of nominal preferences from citizens residing or engaged in commercial activities in the locality of Fodico.
The mandate of the Council coincides with the administrative one, and was renewed in 2014. Another way in which Fodico actively participates in the public life of its community!
Conclusions
Here is a brief overview of Fodico, a village with an ancient and interesting history, which today actively participates in the public life of the municipality of Poviglio. The church of San Giacomo is certainly one of the most suggestive places in the area, but let's not forget the beauty of the surrounding countryside, rich in enchanting landscapes.
If you happen to be in the area, don't hesitate to stop in Fodico to discover for yourself everything that this small village has to offer!
