Located in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region, the municipality of Potenza Picena is inhabited by approximately 15,768 people and is divided into four inhabited areas: Potenza Picena, Porto Potenza Picena, Montecanepino, and San Girio.
Let's explore the territory
Come and discover the beauty of the four neighborhoods of Potenza Picena:
Potenza Picena
Also known as Monte Santo until 1862, this ancient medieval village perched on a hill is surrounded by walls that testify to its millennial history. Walking through its narrow and winding streets, you can admire the splendid churches (in the past there were 27!) and their characteristic bell towers.
Porto Potenza Picena
The largest neighborhood in the municipality of Potenza Picena, Porto Potenza Picena offers beaches with predominantly sandy areas and rocky cliffs framing the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea. If you are looking for a beach holiday, this is the perfect place for you.
Montecanepino
This neighborhood is located on a hill along the southern direction from Porto Potenza to the center of Potenza Picena. Its name derives from the fact that in the past, many cord makers who worked with hemp lived there. From here you can admire a beautiful panorama of the valley below.
San Girio
This small neighborhood is located on the provincial road that connects Potenza Picena to the "Regina" road and consists of a few scattered houses near the sanctuary dedicated to Saint Girio. If you are looking for a quiet and religious place, San Girio may be the right place for you.
Climate
The climate in Potenza Picena is Mediterranean but also has continental characteristics, as the territory goes from the hills to the coastline. This means that there may be temperature differences between the different areas of the region. In general, the climate is fairly mild for most of the year, with a short hot period in summer and some snow in winter.
Origins of the name
In the past, this municipality was known as Monte Santo, but in 1862 the Communal Council decided to change its name to Potenza Picena to refer to the noble Roman city Potentia and to distinguish it from the Lucanian municipality with which it was often confused. The addition of the adjective "Picena" was made to remember that the territory was inhabited by Piceni before the arrival of Rome.
