Posada

Posada: a journey through Sardinian history

If you're looking for a place that offers incredible natural beauty and a journey through the past, Posada is the right place for you. Also known as Pasada in the Sardinian language, this town of 3056 inhabitants is part of the province of Nuoro and is the historical capital of the Barony.

Origins

The history of Posada dates back centuries. According to some archaeological evidence, people began settling in this area since ancient times. In the 1920s, a statuette depicting an Italic Hercules from the 5th-4th century BC was found, along with numerous artifacts attesting to human presence since ancient times.

Posada was an Italic-Etruscan center, probably of Faliscan origin, and was connected to the first attempt of Roman colonization of Sardinia. It is said that between 378 and 377 BC, a century before the conquest, 500 Roman colonists were sent to the island.

Feronia

The name Feronia might make you think of a foreign country, but it's actually an ancient city. The name is also mentioned in Claudius Ptolemy's Geography from the 2nd century, but the city seems to have disappeared. Its location has been sought in the area of Santa Caterina.

Feronia is also the name of an Etruscan goddess, whose cult was celebrated in Capena and Terracina, in the southern Lazio region, and was linked to fertility, water, trade, and many other important life skills. The parallel between this cult and the site of Posada seems obvious, as both were important seafaring and land markets and were strategically located near water.

It has also been suggested that the name Feronia derives from the Latin verb 'porto' followed by the word 'omnia', indicating the place where 'everything is brought'. However, this theory doesn't have much support.

Roman age

After the Roman conquest of Sardinia, the Posada area saw the creation of the Port of Luguidonis or Portus Liquidonis, which was located in the locality of San Giovanni di Posada. Today, we can still visit the bay of San Giovanni di Posada, together with the San Giovanni Tower, of Spanish origin.

Curiosities

In the past, the Posada area was also the residence of many noble families of Sardinia. Among them, the Doria family, with the famous Doria Museum House of Posada, which offers an extraordinary view of the Caletta beach. The Tower of Fava, which can still be admired today, is part of the numerous coastal towers built for defensive purposes against Turkish incursions.

Let yourself be fascinated by Posada's past

In conclusion, Posada is a place where nature and history blend perfectly together. Here, completely immersed in nature, we can hear the echoes of the past. The white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the sea meet the evidence of an ancient civilization. At the same time, the boundless beauty of the landscape and the peace and tranquility of the place make us forget the excitement of our hectic lives. Wandering through the winding streets of the town, we feel as if we are traveling back in time, immersing ourselves in a unique experience. There is no doubt that Posada is a place to visit, where the beauty of nature goes hand in hand with the richness of history.
