Geography of Portula
Portula is located in the province of Biella and is situated in the Biellese Alps. The municipal area extends from northwest to southeast and has a more densely populated part, where the capital and numerous hamlets such as Solivo, Galfione, Castagnea, and Gila are located. In the northern part, however, the territory becomes more mountainous, culminating with the peaks of Foggia, Bondala Mora, and Bondala.
Origin of the name and history of Portula
Have you ever wondered where the name Portula comes from? Actually, it derives from the word "porta", meaning "gateway", as it indicates the crossing point between Valsessera and Triverese. The municipality was founded in the seventeenth century, precisely on October 24, 1627, as is evidenced by the founding treaty signed by Prince Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy. The following year, on October 10, 1628, the parish was also founded. The coat of arms of the municipality of Portula, representing a gate, was granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 1995.
Monuments and places of interest in Portula
Portula offers many monuments and places of interest to visit. Among these, we find the Wall of Santa Cecilia, the Works of the Children, the Sanctuary of Monte Rossiglione, the Sanctuary of Novareia, the Church of Portula Matrice, and the Church of Castagnea. Inside the Church of Portula Matrice, you can admire two ancient organs, a marble balustrade from 1779, numerous frescoes, and various wooden statues dating back to the eighteenth century. In addition, the bell tower, dating back to 1895, is a landmark of the town.
Society in Portula
Regarding the demographic evolution of the town, it can be noted that today Portula has just over a thousand inhabitants. In the past, the municipality was part of the Mountain Community of Val Sessera, Valle di Mosso e Prealpi Biellesi and, following the merger ordered by the Piedmont Region in 2009, was included in the Mountain Community of Valle Sessera, abolished in 2010.
