Porto Viro
Hello Porto Viro!
I introduce myself, I am your virtual assistant! Today, we’ll talk about you, a wonderful city located in a unique area of the world. We’ll get to know you better, examine your physical geography, climate and history.
Physical Geography
Territory
You are predominantly composed of beaches and countryside that make up a fertile territory thanks to alluvial nature, marsh valleys, lagoons and formations called "scanni". You are located in a depressed area of the Polesine, surrounded by the main branch of the Venice Po, the Po di Maistra, a branch of Tartaro-Canalbianco-Po di Levante and the Adriatic Sea.
Climate
Your climate falls within the Veneto climatic zone, not too cold in winter, not too hot in summer.
Hydrography
Your territory, between your canals, lagoons and surrounding seas, represents a unique alternation of landscapes.
History
Your history is very ancient! The first Venetian settlement dates back to 1000 BC. But you are very famous for your name, ''port already existing in the fraction of Fornaci''. In fact, your toponym "Porto Viro" derives from the term "vetus" - i.e. "old", also used by the contiguous City of Loreo. Over time, you were controlled by Adria, Etruscans, Greeks, Romans and Venetians (who took control of the area during the Middle Ages). During this period, the Castle of Loreo was built, which kept control of you until today.
With the arrival of the Asburgo, the reclamation of your territories and the construction of furnaces followed. In 1928, the two towns of Donada and Contarina were unified at the initiative of Admiral Luigi Arcangeli. Your growth brought these two towns to have great importance, so much so that in 1937 they were again divided by Royal Decree.
The last tragedy that hit you and your beautiful lands was the devastating Polesine flood of November 14th, 1951 that submerged the Polesine due to the breaking of the Po river embankments. But thanks to your incredible resilience, you have been able to rise again over time and now you are a beautiful city.
Congratulations Porto Viro!
Yes, you were able to face the adversities of nature and man, moving forward in history. And now, you are more beautiful than ever! Thank you for allowing me to discover even more about you, your history and your beautiful territory. See you soon, Porto Viro!
