The history of Porto Tolle: from the Republic of Venice to the Kingdom of Italy

Porto Tolle is a relatively young municipality. In fact, its territory was created by the Republic of Venice, which, from 1600 to 1604, concerned about the enormous amount of debris brought by the Po that risked siltation of the lagoon, carried out the Cut of Porto Viro at Taglio di Po. In this way, some land emerged that the Republic of Venice assigned to some Venetian patricians. After the Napoleonic parenthesis, Porto Tolle passed under Austrian rule, incorporated into the Ariano district until 1866, when, with all of Veneto, it became part of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1849, Angelo Brunetti and other patriots were executed in Porto Tolle, but today the main square of the municipality is dedicated to Ciceruacchio.
