Physical Geography

Porto Sant'Elpidio: a coastal city nestled between the sea and hills.

Territory

The development of Porto Sant'Elpidio has mainly taken place along the coast, following the State Road 16 Adriatica and the Adriatic Railway. In recent years, following a significant demographic increase, the city has been spreading over the low slopes that rise into the hills and the hills themselves. The hamlets of Corva and Cretarola populate the highest heights of the city's territory.

The hills of the territory are narrow and elongated towards the sea, crossed by six streams: "Fonte di Mare" and "Il Castellano," which originate in Sant'Elpidio a Mare and cross the municipality for 1.3 km, "Fonteserpone," "L'Albero," "Il Palo," and "L'acqualato". Five of them flow into the Adriatic Sea, while L'Acqualato flows into the Tenna River.

Climate

According to the study carried out using ERA-5, from 1979 to 2022, the average temperature of Porto Sant'Elpidio has increased by about 1°C due to global warming.

Origin of the Name

The name "Porto Sant'Elpidio" dates back to the administrative subdivision of the Municipality of Sant'Elpidio a Mare on November 14, 1952. Before this date, the current portion of the territory was administratively controlled by Sant'Elpidio a Mare. However, the first documentation of the port dates back to 886 when Bishop Teodicio granted the taxes to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Great. Throughout history, Porto Sant'Elpidio has had two ports: the old port located at the mouth of Castellano and the new port on the San Alpidio ditch.

History

Porto Sant'Elpidio is a relatively young city, having been established as an autonomous municipality on November 14, 1952. However, the history of this territory dates back to the medieval era, with maps from the 16th-17th centuries showing a small coastal village called "Porto San Lupidio" with a fishing sea and not far from Castrum Castri, a military fortress destroyed in the medieval era.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Porto Sant'Elpidio is a charming and continuously expanding city. The beauty of its territory, the proximity to the sea and the hill, the mild climate, and the call to the history of the past make the city an ideal place to spend a vacation or to settle down. If you want to discover the charm of Porto Sant'Elpidio, we invite you to visit it as soon as possible!
