Exploring the history and geography of Porto San Giorgio.

History

Now let's move on to the most interesting part, the history of this municipality. The city is first mentioned in the "Geography" of the Greek historian Strabo, where the port of Fermo is also mentioned. In his book "Naturalis Historia," the Latin writer Pliny the Elder designates it as "Castellum Firmanorum." Furthermore, the city is present in the Itinerary of Emperor Antoninus Pius, dating back to the 5th century AD, and in the "Peutingerian Table," a geographical map from the Roman imperial era. It is said that this region was inhabited by Venetian or Dalmatian fishermen (ethnic group) who gave life to a settlement that in 1164 passed by order of Frederick Barbarossa to the Chapter (Christianity) of Fermo and in 1266 was leased by the Municipality of Fermo.

Over the centuries, the history of Porto San Giorgio has been marked by attempts to regain autonomy from Fermo. In 1267, Lorenzo Tiepolo, podestà in Fermo and future Doge of the Republic of Venice, gave impetus to the port, equipping it with a fortress that took his name, to defend Fermo from Saracen incursions from the sea. For this reason, Castel San Giorgio was recognized the right to parade at the head of the Cavalcade of the Assumption, on August 15.

In 1362, fortifications were built to defend the port against Turkish raids in the Adriatic. Over the centuries, the Castle has always tried to become autonomous from Fermo, but the episcopal city has always opposed its autonomy. However, the city suffered traumatic events due to tensions between the two cities, such as the event of August 15, 1490, when the archive and documents of the Palazzo del Vicario di Porto San Giorgio were burned down.
