Greetings from the province of Reggio Calabria
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about my wonderful land: the province of Reggio Calabria. Although this province was abolished in 2017 to become the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, its rich cultural and artistic heritage continues to be an excellence of the region.
Physical Geography
The territory of the province of Reggio Calabria is very diverse and particular. It extends for about 220 km of coastline, from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Ionian Sea, from the Piana di Gioia to the tip of Punta Stilo. The mountainous area is represented by the Aspromonte massif, totally included in the provincial territory, while the Piana di Gioia represents the only plain. At the time of abolition, the province had an area of 3,183 km² and included 97 municipalities.
Municipalities
The province of Reggio Calabria was composed of 97 municipalities, each with its own traditions and beauties to discover. Among the most famous and enchanting, I remember: Reggio Calabria, which houses the famous National Museum of Magna Graecia; Gerace, a beautiful medieval village perched on the hill; Scilla, with its Aragonese Castle and the particular beach of Chianalea.
History
The province of Reggio Calabria has ancient origins, dating back to its establishment as the province of Calabria Ulteriore Prima in 1817. However, the history of this province is much older, dating back to the Magna Graecia era when the city of Rhegion, now Reggio Calabria, was founded.
Conclusions
The province of Reggio Calabria is a wonderful land full of natural, artistic and cultural beauties. Each of its municipalities has its own personality and tradition, making this province a unique and particular place. If you want to discover the beauties of Calabria, Reggio Calabria and its province are definitely a must-visit destination.
