During the Middle Ages, Porcari experienced remarkable growth, thanks to its strategic position along the Via Francigena and the presence of Lake Sesto. The city represented the XXV stage of the itinerary of Sigerico di Canterbury and defined itself as "Castrum Porcari". Furthermore, the hill of Porcari, also known as Mount San Giusto, was an important observation point for the possible arrival of enemy attacks.
