Badia Prataglia: history and unspoiled nature.

History

The foundation of Badia Prataglia dates back to the year 986 with the foundation of the Abbey of S. Maria and S. Benedetto di Prataglia. This abbey was founded by Benedictine monks from Montecassino and under the power of the Bishop of Arezzo, Elemperto. This town has a truly fascinating history, in fact, the abbey increased its power and possessions until the mid-twelfth century, thanks in particular to a series of donations from the bishops of Arezzo. Badia Prataglia had possessions in Partina, Marciano della Chiana, Salutio, Bibbiena and much more. However, the expansion of the abbey clashed with that of Camaldoli, which gradually took over.

In 1157 the abbey was subjected to Rodolfo, Camaldolese General Prior, along with all the possessions. This decision was made because of the disputes and struggles between the two religious and temporal powers. In 1314 the church of Prataglia was rebuilt, but the abbey survived only until 1391 when Pope Boniface IX suppressed it, definitively incorporating its assets into the Camaldolese heritage.
