A journey to Poppi
Hello everyone! Today, I'll tell you about a beautiful town in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany: Poppi. With its 5816 inhabitants, it is included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and it's not hard to understand why. Poppi is famous for its castle and its history dating back to the Middle Ages. But let's see together what its main characteristics are.
Physical Geography
Poppi is located in a medium-high seismic zone and is classified as zone E in terms of climate, with an average atmospheric diffusivity. In simple terms, I recommend you bring an umbrella if you decide to visit this splendid Tuscan village!
Origins of the name
The name "Poppi" derives from a Latin word, "Puppī", which could be traced back to a Latin personal name, "Pūpius", or a Lombardic anthroponym, "Poppo".
History
Poppi's history is closely linked to the Guidi counts, who dominated the town from 1191 to 1440. It was precisely Count Simone Guidi who began the transformation of the Castello dei Conti Guidi's cassero into a noble residence in the city in the 1200s, while in 1261 he built the current city walls with the five gates of access to the town, now reduced to four. Dante Alighieri stayed in Poppi's castle in 1307 and 1311. Today, the castle's halls host numerous art exhibitions, conventions, and musical performances.
Monuments and places of interest
Poppi is rich in monuments and places of interest that should be visited. The Castello dei Conti Guidi is one of Poppi's most important historical monuments, and together with the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and San Bartolomeo, the Pieve di Santa Maria, and the Palazzo Crudeli, make the village a jewel to be discovered. But not only that: Poppi is also famous for the Eremo di Camaldoli, the Monastery of Camaldoli, the Convent of Certomondo, the Church of San Matteo, the Church of Madonna del Morbo, the Camaldolese Monastery, and the Propositura dei Santi Marco e Lorenzo. Moreover, if you are interested in history and human rights, you should not miss the permanent museum "Affaire" Tommaso Crudeli & Human rights, located at the Castello dei Conti Guidi.
Society
Poppi has 5816 inhabitants, but as of December 31, 2010, the resident foreign population was 819, with the majority coming from Romania.
Culture
Cinema has visited Poppi several times: two films were shot, "Una vergine per il principe" in 1965, and "Il ciclone" in 1996, filmed in Stia, Laterina, and Poppi.
Economy
If you love craftsmanship, Poppi will not disappoint you. Craftsmanship divides its attention from renaissance to modern style, passing through rustic, thanks to the renowned and ancient furniture of the place.
In conclusion, Poppi is a small pearl of enchanting beauty, where the history and charm of the Middle Ages blend perfectly with modern art and culture.
