Ponzano di Fermo

Ponzano di Fermo: a journey through history, culture, and sports

Hello everyone! Today I will take you on a journey to discover the beautiful municipality of Ponzano di Fermo, a charming village with just over 1600 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, located in the Marche region.

History

The history of this place is very ancient, with the first settlements dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. Later, during the Lombard period, the territory was donated to the monks of the abbey of Farfa, who built the valuable Church of Santa Maria Mater Domini in the 12th century. In 1059, the monks donated it to the Bishop of Fermo. It was only in 1570 that the castle and the nearby lands, including the current hamlet of Capparuccia, were separated from the Municipality of Fermo and constituted the Municipality of Ponzano. After the Unification of Italy, the Municipality was renamed "Ponzano di Fermo" to avoid homonyms.

Church of Santa Maria Mater Domini and Madonna delle Cataste

The Church of Santa Maria Mater Domini, often known as the Church of San Marco, is a valuable medieval church that was built in the 12th century on a structure from the 6th-7th century. The church is very interesting both from a historical-artistic point of view and from a religious point of view. If you are traveling to Ponzano, you cannot miss it! Also, I recommend visiting the ruins of the Church of Madonna delle Cataste, an octagonal temple built following the alleged apparitions of the Madonna to some farmers in the area. Today, the church has become a tourist attraction.

Institutions, organizations, and associations

Ponzano di Fermo has several associations, including the Proloco "Tre Colli" which organizes numerous events and manifestations throughout the year, the Tritakatene MTB Group, a group of mountain bikers for cycling enthusiasts, and the Marche Musica Association, organizer of the international music festival Armonie della sera.

Ponzano di Fermo has many festivals and events throughout the year. On April 25th, the patron saint festival of San Marco is celebrated, while on the third Sunday of August, the Sagra del Cinghiale is held, a festival dedicated to local gastronomy.
