Welcome to Ponza

Hello everyone! Welcome to Ponza, a beautiful island located in the central Tyrrhenian Sea, south of San Felice Circeo. We are happy to host you and show you all the wonders that our island has to offer. But first, let's take a tour of the geography of the island.

Geography

Ponza is the largest island in the Pontine Archipelago, which also includes Gavi Island, Zannone Island, Palmarola Island, Ventotene Island, and Santo Stefano Island. The only permanently inhabited islands are Ponza and Ventotene. The island stretches from Faraglione La Guardia in the south to Punta dell'Incenso in the northeast and has a narrow and elongated shape that resembles the letter "i" of the alphabet. In the middle, we find Gavi Island, separated from Ponza by a stretch of sea only 120 meters wide. Ponza has an area of 7.5 km² and is predominantly hilly, with a maximum altitude of 280 m on Mount Guardia.

The coast of Ponza is very rugged and rocky, but there is a low bay where the ports of Sant'Antonio, Giancos, and Santa Maria are located, derived from a process of accumulation of torrential debris that gave rise to a fertile valley. All of Ponza's beaches are characterized by gravel and rocks, except for the famous Chiaia di Luna beach, which also has some fine sand. This beach is surrounded by a wide cliff overlooking the sea and has attracted thousands of tourists every year, especially for its large presence of underwater caves and cliffs. Also famous are the Scogliera and the Faraglioni of Lucia Rosa, named after the tragic love story of a young woman in love with a peasant but prevented from marrying him due to the opposition of her family.

The flora of the island is typical of the Mediterranean, with the presence of Agave, Opuntia ficus-indica, Genisteae, Phillyrea, Myrtus communis, dwarf palm, Quercus ilex, Juniperus, Pistacia lentiscus, and Olea europaea. The rocky soil of Ponza has a limited variety of terrestrial fauna, but the marine fauna is very varied and abundant in species such as sea bass, dragonfish, squid, tuna, bream, red mullet, fox shark, etc...

The climate of Ponza is subtropical Mediterranean, with a moderate range of temperatures thanks to the presence of high pressure.
