Ponti

Welcome to Ponti, the Piedmontese municipality on the banks of the Bormida river!

Ponti is a small municipality in the Alessandria Monferrato, in Piedmont, with only 580 inhabitants. However, this historically-rich municipality offers many interesting things to discover. In the following paragraphs, I will guide you through the origins of Ponti and its local culture.

The history of Ponti

The origins of Ponti date back to the pre-Roman era, when the Ligurian Stazielli inhabited the area that is now Acqui Terme. During Roman domination, the Emilia Scauri road was built through the Ponti territory, which was called "Pontum" due to the bridges built by the Romans over the Bormida river. Today, it is still possible to admire an Antonine column in the portico of the municipal palace, in memory of this important Roman communication road.

The symbols of Ponti

The Ponti municipal coat of arms depicts the symbols of the Del Carretto family, which was very important in the history of the municipality.

Culture and events

The "sagra del polentone" is the most important festival in Ponti, and takes place every year on the penultimate Sunday of Carnival. The tradition of the "polentone" dates back to the second half of the 16th century, when the Marquis Cristoforo del Carretto gave refuge to a group of cauldron-makers from Dipignano, and in exchange received their skill in preparing polenta. Today, the "polentari" of Ponti are part of the Maestri Polentari d'Italia, and the tradition of polenta has inspired the twinning between Ponti and Dipignano.

Administration

Ponti has seen several mayors succeed each other over the years. A table is presented with the names of the administrations.

Sport

The Ponti Calcio ASD is an amateur sports association that was founded in July 2007 by a group of young locals. The team currently plays in the second category championship and has the colors red and gold.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you are looking for a small Piedmontese municipality with a rich history and local culture, I recommend visiting Ponti. You can attend the "sagra del polentone," discover the Roman history of the municipality, and enjoy the local football matches. Ponti welcomes you!
