Pontelatone: the town at the foot of Mount Friento

History

The history of Pontelatone dates back to the 10th century, during the period of fortified towns. In the Norman period, the feudal lord of the town was Manasseus, while from 1189 to 1268 it was possessed by the Montefuscolo family. In the Angevin period, Pontelatone became a feudal possession of Emanuele Freapane (Frangipane), along with the barony of Formicola. In 1268, Charles II assigned the barony of Formicola to the city of Capua, which also included Pontelatone. During the Aragonese period, the barony of Formicola was granted to Diomede I Carafa, who, together with his son Gian Tommaso, remodelled the structure of the Convent of the Annunciation of Mary and embellished the castle built by Marzano.

Among the places of interest in Pontelatone is the archaeological site of Trebula Balliensis, located in the hamlet of Treglia.

Society

As for demographic evolution, as of January 1, 2021, the resident population of Pontelatone was 1519 inhabitants, of which 3.6% were represented by people of foreign origin. The nationalities most represented were India, Morocco, Albania, Ukraine, and Romania.

Infrastructure and transportation

The Pontelatone station is located on the Alifana Railway line and is an important means of transportation for the area.

Administration

As for administration, Pontelatone is governed by a municipal council led by the mayor, currently in office.
